Let the Big Dogs Eat...Healthier!

We've all heard that expression in a variety of ways, but here at Brookside Barkery we believe in "better health through better nutrition", so we say, "Let the Big Dogs Eat Healthier!"  We have many options to help you improve the health of your big dog without breaking the bank.  Plus, the better you feed your big dog, the less "stuff" you have in your backyard!

Here are a few ways to improve the health and longevity of your big dog:

  1. High quality proteins - necessary for those big muscles.  Look for real proteins in food, especially as the first ingredient.  You could also add a frozen or freeze-dried raw meat topper with some bone broth.
  2. Complex Carbohydrates - dogs get energy from "good carbs" in their diet and big dogsneed a lot of it.  Look for barley, peas, quinoa, brown rice, and sweet potatoes.  Avoid empty fillers such as corn, wheat, and soy, as these have been known to cause allergies and obesity in dogs
  3. Glucosamine and Chondroitin - important for joint health, which is crucial for large breeds that are prone to joint issues like hip dysplasia.  You can add high quality "Hip & Joint" supplements to any regular diet.
  4. Healthy Fats - provides essential fatty acids like Omega-3 and Omega-6 for healthy skin and coat and overall energy.  Many premium dog foods include these, especially ones with fish protein, or you can add them as a supplement.
  5. Fiber - for healthy digestion and overall gut health.  Look for good fruits, veggies, especially beet pulp or pumpkin in your foods.  There are also several pumkin toppers available.
